Most soft tonneau covers can be easily retracted into a storage device or canister mounted right behind the truck’s cab.
A truck bed cover can increase a pickup’s speed by decreasing wind resistance. When a tonneau is installed on a truck, it covers the bed and disallows wind to push against the tailgate. What happens when no tonneau cover is installed? The driver must either drive with the tailgate open, which is not a safe option, or remove the tailgate and replace it with a net to avoid wind resistance. Any of these options leave the bed’s load free to shift while the truck is in motion. Moreover, items could fall out of the bed while the truck is moving at a high speed. Now that is truly dangerous on the highway or other high traffic areas.
