Jacquelyn Babush -
Jewelry Conservator

When examining a piece of fine antique jewelry, we take into consideration the quality of the materials, including stone identification, testing and grading, the historical cuts of stones, metallurgy, period construction methods, condition, design, and historical rarity and context, as well as every aspect of the original jeweler's art. We also provide this service for clients with ancient bronze, silver or gold jewelry in need of professional cleaning and/or valuation.

Ponsford can provide documented references with which to compare pieces, as well as complete valuations of treasured early jewelry. Minor repairs, including cleaning, non-intrusive lab testing, and small stone replacements, are performed locally. Pieces in need of more significant restoration can be referred to an historically-educated GIA Graduate Gemologist. Intrusive agents such as ultrasonic cleaning for jewelry dating before 1880, will never be used. Nearly all cleaning will be performed by caring hands with a delicate touch. Each examination will include a photograph of the item as well as a written report stating accurate circa dating, materials, condition, gold and/or gemstone content, rarity, historical significance, and, for insurance purposes, a suggested replacement value. When requested, a published/documented source of similar examples of jewelry will be included for the further education of the client (which we encourage). If we judge the piece to be in need of restoration, we can present a general outline of expense, time involved, referrals (if not in-house), and the benefits of restoration.
